Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist for Alberta

A practical GBP checklist for Alberta service businesses: categories, photos, services, reviews and posts that help you show up in the Map Pack.

If you want a Google Business Profile that actually helps Alberta customers find you, treat it as a checklist you finish once, then a habit you keep.

The profile is often the first thing people see — before your website. An incomplete listing is a closed sign on the busiest street in town.

This is the order we use for Calgary and surrounding towns. It matches the work in our GBP optimization service.

The one-time setup

1. Confirm you are the owner. If a former vendor still holds the login, recover it before you change anything.

2. Pick one primary category. "Plumber" or "Dental clinic," not a pile of near-matches. Secondary categories can support real extra services.

3. Set the service area honestly. Calgary plus the towns you actually drive to. Do not add Edmonton if you never go.

4. Write a short business description. Who you serve, what you do, where you work. No keyword stuffing. No "best in Alberta" claims you cannot stand behind.

5. Add services with prices where you can. Even ranges help. People filter by service on Maps.

6. Hours, phone, website, appointment link. The phone number should match the site. The website should load on a phone.

7. Cover and logo. A real photo of the shop, van or team beats a stock skyline.

Already listed but invisible? The usual issues are the wrong category, a suspended profile, or a website that does not match the name. Request a GBP review.

Photos that help more than posts

Google wants recent, original photos. Exteriors, interiors, team, work in progress, finished jobs. Skip downloaded stock.

For trades: the van, the job site, the before and after. For clinics: the front desk, the treatment room, the parking. For retailers: the shelf you are proud of, not a collage.

Plan a 20-minute photo walk every quarter. That beats a one-time dump of 80 images from 2019.

Reviews without being awkward

Ask after a good job, send a direct link, and reply to every review — including the bad ones, briefly and calmly. Never buy reviews. Never offer a discount for a five-star.

A profile with 12 real reviews and replies will beat a profile with 80 that look copied.

Weekly habits that keep the listing alive

  • One post: a job, a seasonal offer, or a change in hours.
  • Check Q&A. Answer as the business.
  • Confirm hours around holidays and Stampede.
  • Remove photos that no longer look like you.

This is the "management" part, and it is why we offer ongoing GBP management separately from a one-time setup.

How GBP connects to the website

The name, address and phone on the site must match the profile. Service pages should exist for the things you list. If Maps sends someone to a homepage that does not mention the service they searched, they leave.

Pair this checklist with the local SEO guide if you are also working on the site.

What we will not do

Create a second listing to "rank twice." Use a virtual office as a storefront. Guarantee the Map Pack. Those tactics get listings removed.

Get the profile reviewed

Send us the Maps URL. We will tell you what is missing, what is risky, and whether a one-time cleanup or a monthly habit is the better spend.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Business Profile optimization?+

It is the work of making your Maps listing complete, accurate and active: the right categories, service areas, photos, services, hours, Q&A and a review process. Optimization does not mean paying Google for a badge. It means giving the profile enough real information to appear for nearby searches.

How long does GBP optimization take in Calgary?+

A first cleanup — categories, descriptions, photos, services and tracking — is often one to two weeks. Reviews and posts are ongoing. Rankings in the Map Pack still depend on proximity, relevance and the strength of your site and citations.

Do I need a physical office to rank in Google Maps?+

You need a service-area or storefront setup that matches how you actually operate. Hiding an address you do not want customers to visit is allowed for many service businesses, but fake locations and virtual offices are a fast way to get suspended. We will not set up a listing that breaks Google's rules.
