Shopify Store Setup Guide for Calgary Retailers

A practical Shopify setup for Calgary retailers: theme, payments, shipping in Canada, apps to skip, and what to launch without.

If you are setting up Shopify in Calgary, the goal is a store that can take a payment, ship inside Canada, and not look like a default theme. You do not need twenty apps on day one.

This is the setup order we use for Alberta retailers. It matches our Shopify development projects.

The launch checklist

1. Domain and store name. Buy the .ca if you can. Point it only after checkout is tested.

2. Theme. Pick one commercial theme close to the layout you want. Fighting a theme costs more than buying a better one.

3. Payments. Shopify Payments is the default. Confirm it accepts the cards your customers use. Add PayPal if your audience still asks.

4. Taxes. GST and provincial rules. If you sell into the US later, that is a second conversation.

5. Shipping. Canada Post or your courier, local pickup in Calgary, and a rural surcharge if you actually ship to the county. Free shipping thresholds belong here, not in a pop-up.

6. Products. Start with what you can photograph and restock. Hide the rest.

7. Policies. Refunds, shipping times, and who pays return postage. Alberta customers read these.

8. Analytics and pixels. So you know if ads waste money.

Stuck choosing a theme? Send two store URLs you like. We will tell you which theme is closest and what still needs custom sections.

Apps you can skip at launch

Email pop-ups, fake scarcity timers, chat widgets, extra search, and three upsell tools. They slow the store and stack monthly fees.

Add reviews when you have reviews. Add subscriptions when someone asks to subscribe.

A fast cart converts better than a clever app.

Photos and copy that sell in Alberta

Show scale. A ceramic mug needs a hand. A jacket needs a body. A piece of furniture needs a room.

Write what it is made of, the dimensions, and who it is for. "Premium quality" is not a description.

If you sell locally, say you can pick up in Calgary and which neighbourhood the studio is in. People still prefer not to wait on shipping.

SEO that is worth doing on a new store

Unique titles and descriptions. One collection per real category. Do not launch 40 empty collection pages. Connect the store to Search Console. Keep the blog empty until you have something useful to say.

After launch

Someone has to update inventory, answer "did it ship?", and replace the sold-out hero image. Put a name on that job. A care plan is cheaper than a store that looks abandoned by week three.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify development cost in Calgary?+

A professional setup on a commercial theme — payments, Canadian shipping, tax, and a starter catalogue — typically costs $4,500 to $8,500 CAD. Custom theme sections, migrations and wholesale features cost more. Shopify's own monthly subscription is separate.

Which Shopify plan do Calgary retailers need?+

Basic is enough to launch. Upgrade when you need lower card rates, more staff accounts, or reports you actually use. Do not buy the top plan because a YouTube video said so.

Can you migrate my existing store to Shopify?+

Yes. Products, customers and some redirect history can move. Reviews and apps usually do not move cleanly. We quote migration as its own line so you can see the work.
